Elevating Cultural Heritage Through Fashion
Clothing from different cultures around the world isn’t just fabric and thread; traditional clothing also reflects a community’s identity and history. Choosing to wear traditional clothing from a particular country usually comes with a sense of connection to that particular culture.
I wore Indian saris for a while when I attended Fordham University because of the influence of one of my professors who later became a dear friend. I even wore a sari to her wedding.
My connection to my friend’s culture became so deep that I learned to speak some Hindi and often played cards with her mom who didn’t speak English. During these years I was proud to walk the streets of New York wearing my colorful saris, although I did turn a few heads along the way. And, hey, I can still count to 10 in Hindi, even though my friend’s mom won most of the card games.
